Many customers use Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic when diagnosed with SIBO.
Research does indicate that probiotics are helpful for digestive issues, especially an imbalance in gut flora.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is what it sounds like: too much bacteria in the small intestine. This bacteria is a pathogen rather than a beneficial bacteria.
SIBO occurs when bacteria in the small intestine become overgrown and problematic, often having migrated up from the large intestine. When bacteria overgrow in the small intestine, our absorption of nutrients becomes impaired due to an inflamed and leaky gut. Normal healthy foods like apples, garlic, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, avocados, etc. become our worst enemy due to microbial fermentation of the starch and sugar content of plant foods like these.
Your healthcare provider may recommend a low-FODMAP diet. FODMAPs are a type of carbohydrate (FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols.). Not every carb is a FODMAP. You’ll want to talk to a practitioner who’s knowledgeable about nutrition so you can know what you can eat and how to meet your nutritional needs on this plan.
Since fermented foods can be bothersome to those with histamine intolerance, a probiotic may be the answer.
